TNT official supplier to Turin 2006

06 May 2004 - 10:39 CET

TNT is now a sponsor of Turin 2006 in the role of 'Official Supplier' of logistics services and express transport. The agreement was signed at the offices of Turin 2006 by the Chairman of TOROC Valentino Castellani, the Chairman of TNT Logistics Italy Fausto Forti and the Managing Director of TNT Global Express Italy, Giuseppe Smeriglio.

More than 15,000 different types of products - for a total of 500,000 cubic metres of goods handled, stored and distributed - will be destined for use or consumption during the Olympic and Paralympic Games at Turin 2006. With this agreement, all the main problem areas relating to the management of warehouse space and distribution of goods at the Olympic sites will be resolved by TNT.

'The partnership with TNT guarantees us technological innovation and reliability in managing express transport and logistics, two fundamental sectors for the organisational apparatus of the Games' said Paolo Balistreri, the Transport and Logistics Manager of TOROC.

For TNT, Project Manager Gianni Perracchione commented: 'There comes a time when a company of global dimensions has to take up the challenges the market presents - the challenge of the Olympic Games in Piemonte, given the presence of two of our major operations in the logistics and express transport sectors, was bound to cast us in the light of a leading player'.

The role of TNT will be to manage and co-ordinate the implementation of systems and structures and deployment of vehicles needed to ensure an efficient operational model in the provisioning and distribution stage for every type of supply required. During the Games, the operational team will grow to 250 members, who will be entrusted with the task of facilitating all the stages linked to provisioning by suppliers, storage and distribution on the basis of the daily needs on the various competition sites. Three types of warehouses will be available and used according to the activities that need to be carried out and the materials that need to be managed. With these facilities, more than 50,000 square metres of space will be available in equipped units at Borgone di Susa, Collegno, None and Volvera.

Express transport security will be guaranteed by a system called 'Sky Guard', an electronic eye capable of performing real-time monitoring - via the GPS satellite network - of all TNT's vehicles travelling on the road and motorway networks, 24 hours a day. It is predicted that this tool will be indispensable, especially during the peak period of the meet when more than 400 vehicles will be scheduled to be on the move.
