TNT Logistics North America, a leading provider of supply chain logistics services, has attained integrated ISO 9001:2000 and OHSAS 18001 certification for one of its Indianapolis-area logistics centers. This operation provides aftermarket parts distribution, kitting, subassembly, sequencing and plant metering for Eaton Corporation. This is the first such certification since TNT launched its integrated management system in 2005. The certification process was led by an independent registrar, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. According to the company's senior vice president of shared services, Mark Johnson, the certification process took about three months to complete.
"The registrar had a number of positive observations about TNT ‘s workforce, especially their level of knowledge about the industry and the customer's business," Johnson said. "They were also impressed with the operational layout and level of care and detail in handling the customer's material. The company's safety program was also found to be in great working order and received good reviews on results and employee involvement."
TNT's new integrated management system , EQS, was named for the company's environmental, quality and safety initiatives, and provides the structure and tools needed to ensure TNT's operations achieve operational excellence, maintain a safe work place and have a responsible impact on the environment. EQS gives TNT's operations a standardized, simplified approach to obtaining certification to several key international standards, including ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001. As a result of EQS, the company will no longer have separate ISO and OHSAS certification processes.
"This is first certification of an integrated system of both 9001 and 18001 together in one management system," said Johnson. "This is a unique accomplishment in our industry and is reflective of the hard work and dedication of our employees."
"EQS is our approach to achieving operational excellence as part of TNT's corporate sustainability initiatives," said Melissa Alwood, senior manager of quality, TNT Logistics North America. "EQS was developed by identifying best practices within our operations, coupled with the unique services needs of customers like Eaton. The result is a system that makes sense for our business, one that can be readily certified by accredited registrars, and one that can be modified to work well at the contract level."
