The technology developed by TNT Logistics and Rolls-Royce to achieve a 30% cut in Rolls-Royce's transport costs has resulted in the companies jointly winning the top IT accolade in the UK transport industry. The two companies were presented with the Information Technology Award at the International Freighting Weekly freight industry awards. The judges commended the efforts to integrate IT which has improved the flow of information and created tremendous operational efficiencies for TNT Logistics and Rolls-Royce, resulting in a seamless supply chain.
The joint submission covered the development, implementation and operation of a unique IT track and trace solution for Rolls-Royce in the UK. The IT solution included the introduction of in-cab technology and the scanning of bar-coded items through all stages of the cross-dock operation. An added benefit of the logistics solution is a saving of 2.7 million road miles a year, reducing congestion and pollution.
TNT Logistics operates a parts collection service for Rolls-Royce in the UK and North America with a service for mainland Europe to follow shortly. An engine delivery service provided by TNT Logistics for Rolls-Royce's aerospace business satisfies demand for new and replacement engines worldwide. TNT Logistics has one of the most advanced global IT platforms in the industry and exploits information technology to achieve integration and visibility throughout the supply chain, which supports the process of cutting cost and reducing lead time or time to market.
Neil Crossthwaite, Managing Director, TNT Logistics said, "We are absolutely delighted to have won this outstanding accolade in partnership with Rolls-Royce. We understand that the flow of information can create as many, if not more, efficiencies in the supply chain than the improvements in the physical distribution. This award recognises our achievements in providing the very best IT in our industry as part of our total logistics solution."
