TNT Logistics Driver of the Year
20 September 2004 - 10:17 CET
Steve Axford has beaten off tough competition to win TNT Logistics' annual Driver of the Year competition - taking home a brand new Volkswagen Golf.Based in Derbyshire, Mr Axford is a member of the TNT Logistics team on the Deb contract, delivering Deb skincare and cleaning products from the warehouse in South Normanton to customers throughout the UK.
Like all the other TNT Logistics drivers eligible to enter the competition, Mr Axford has been accident free for at least the last year and was also assessed for other attributes including good housekeeping and customer care, before his contract manager nominated him for the competition.
Neil Crossthwaite, Managing Director, says the competition's primary purpose is to promote better driving and road safety. "This is why we offer such a terrific prize." The one-day competition held at the MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) proving ground, includes a road test and a manoeuvres exercise assessed by IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) as well as a written exam. BRAKE, the road safety organisation, also organised a voluntary test on the rules related to drinking and driving.
Keith Shuck, IAM Event Coordinator said "I have been very impressed over the years with both the high driving standard and professionalism of the candidates."
Mr Axford has been driving trucks and buses for more than 20 years, and spent ten years as a driving instructor for bus drivers. He has worked for TNT Logistics for three years.
"I love driving. I would be lost without a wheel in front of me," he says. Mr Axford's wife doesn't drive but his daughter has just taken her first driving lesson, so he is sure the new VW Golf will be put to good use.
