Flexible container hire enables cost savings at Karlshamns

Karlshamns has made major savings on the storage and transport of vegetable fats by turning to TNT Container Logistics' hire service.

The company switched from plastic drums and containers to TNT Container Logistics' 1,000 litre Pallecon Food Grade Liquid intermediate bulk containers because of the flexible hire and de-hire service.

Karlshamns transports its vegetable oils and fats to various food manufacturers across the world. The drums and 20 litre plastic containers previously used had become problematic and costly for the company because of disposal and reconditioning. A more flexible and environment-friendly option was therefore required.

TNT Container Logistics' hire service is ideal for Karlshamns because it offers the flexibility to hire containers in one country and return them to another.

The Pallecon containers are always used with disposable liners, making them ideal for use in the food industry where both product and environmental hygiene are of paramount importance. Because the liners are completely emptied and discarded after use, no cleaning is needed and the problem of disposing of drums is eliminated, thereby reducing maintenance costs.

Karlshamns also uses TNT Container Logistics' heated base boards at the bottom of the units, whereby the heated panels reduce solid fats to liquid in order to discharge the product more easily.

Ernie Newell, managing director of Karlshamns said: "The new heated Pallecons are a great opportunity to provide customers with a cost-effective alternative to boxes, drums and expensive heated containers for solid fats. With increasing pressures on handling costs and environmental impact, hiring such containers is extremely valuable."

The containers can be block stacked five high when full and can be easily demounted for five containers to fit into one vehicle load space, making their storage and return transportation more efficient. The galvanised steel tube frames make the Pallecons strong and highly durable, ensuring that contents are prevented from being damaged.

John Wright, sales and marketing director at TNT Container Logistics said: "Increasing environmental concerns and tightening legislation surrounding waste packaging means that returnable containers have major benefits over steel drums which often have to be disposed of or reconditioned after use."
