CEVA launches eco-sustainable logistics hub in Italy

09 June 2010 - 13:28 CET

New warehouse in San Pietro Mosezzo set to save 1.3 million kg of CO2 per annum
Investment in green technology to deliver total CO2 savings of 9.5 million kg each year in Italy

Milan, Italy, 9 June 2010 - CEVA Logistics, a leading global supply chain management company, announces the third building in the eco-sustainable center of San Pietro Mosezzo, near Novara, Italy, which takes the total available space of the logistics hub to 85,000 sq m.

The San Pietro Mosezzo warehouse has been fitted in total with over 9,600 photovoltaic panels, covering an area of 16,000 sq m. The plant can produce 2,500 MWh of energy per year, which is the equivalent of 700 households - saving on average 1,300 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The logistics hub is also equipped with 98 loading bays handling approximately 25 incoming and 40 outgoing trucks each day.

Gianfranco Sgro, President of CEVA in Southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: "This new structure has been built to accommodate demand from the fashion and publishing sectors. San Pietro Mosezzo is a logistics hub within Italy and a center of excellence for these sectors which demand fast product turnaround and the very best technology and logistics solutions in order to meet their specific needs. This warehouse, along with all our future investments, is fitted with highly sophisticated eco-friendly devices and our global investment strategy aims to combine efficiency and flexibility with eco-sustainability and respect for the environment."

CEVA's new warehouse has been equipped with the latest IT systems and cutting-edge technical services for customers, handling approximately 35,000 products daily. The warehouse has been built in collaboration with FAP Investments S.r.l., a company specializing in real estate logistics, and with FAP Energy S.r.l., whose mission is to develop high-efficiency photovoltaic systems at the forefront of renewable energy. Fap Investments has also built the second warehouse at San Pietro Mosezzo for CEVA; a structure covering 25,000 sq m equipped with photovoltaic plant of 1 MW, producing about 1,100 MWh of energy and saving on average 600 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Between the end of 2009 and the start of 2010, CEVA inaugurated a further two cutting-edge logistics hubs at Martinengo (BG) and Pognano (BG), again built in collaboration with FAP Investments S.r.l. The two plants, equipped with the latest eco-compatible devices and aimed principally at customers in the technology sector, are clear examples of CEVA's commitment to the environment. The Martinengo plant covers a surface area of 45,000 sq m, producing about 1,600 MWh annually, and saving CO2 emissions of approximately 840 tons annually. The Pognano plant covers 31,000 sq m and is equipped with 4,000 photovoltaic panels, producing on average 1,000 MWh annually, with a saving of 560 tons of CO2 emissions per year. This year will also see Fap and Fap Energy complete a new eco-sustainable platform for CEVA in Italy; another positive step towards reducing CEVA's Carbon Footprint in warehouse activities.

By the end of 2010, CEVA will complete seven logistics hubs in Italy with eco-sustainable structures and will refurbish two of the existing sites to the same specification. With a total area of 340,000 sq m and combined production of over 17,800 MWh in solar energy, CEVA will contribute to the protection of the environment by noticeably reducing CO2 emissions by 9,500 tons each year. The total amount of electricity produced independently by CEVA will be enough to provide power for more than 5,000 households.
